Although summer break just started, Nevada County Public Health Department is reminding parents that all incoming seventh graders will need to show proof of Tdap (Whooping Cough) immunization to be able to begin school in the fall. This is a continuance of Assembly Bill 354, which was signed into law and effects students in both private and public schools. All entering and advancing seventh graders, new and transfers must bring a record of receiving the Tdap immunization to school.
Tdap is a vaccine that protects against Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis. A serious outbreak of pertussis, known as whooping cough affected 9,000 Californians and caused 10 infant deaths in California in 2010. Adolescents and adults are also susceptible to Pertussis.
August will be here quicker than you think so don’t forget to take time now to immunize your child against Pertussis. Please contact your health care provider to prepare for the school year by getting vaccinated.
