Town Hall As Major Wildfire Prevention Project Begins
Town Hall As Major Wildfire Prevention Project Begins

Work is underway on a critical 350-acre wildfire fuels reduction project in Deer Creek Canyon. Learn more about the safety efforts at a Town Hall meeting this Monday at 6 p.m. in Nevada City.
Work got underway this week for the first half of the Deer Creek Canyon Fuels Reduction Project. And the features will be discussed during a Town Hall meeting scheduled in Nevada City Monday evening. The canyon was identified last year, in Nevada County’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan, as one of the most hazardous areas in the county, based on its climate, topography, and vegetation conditions. The city’s Community Risk Reduction Officer, Evan McLenithan, says residents and visitors may have noticed increased forestry equipment activity and some temporary noise…
McLenithan says the first phase of the 350-acre project is focusing on approximately 174 acres of mechanical fuels treatment on larger, privately-owned parcels in the western portion of the project area. That’ll primarily consist of mastication, a process that mechanically reduces smaller trees, brush, and ladder fuels, while retaining larger, healthy trees. And McLenithan says the second half of the work will be completed by the city’s fuels crew, that’s funded through Measure C, which local voters approved in 2024….
McLenithan says the project is expected to continue through
February. The Town Hall starts at six Monday evening at Miners Foundry Cultural
Center.
