Nevada City Man and Father Sentenced For Illegal Gold Mining

A Nevada City father and son were sentenced to jail and hefty fines for illegal gold mining and environmental damage along Keystone Creek.
A Nevada City man and his father have been sentenced to time in the Sierra County jail for illegal gold mining. According to a news release from the District Attorney’s Office, Gregory Arnoldi, Junior, and his father, Gregory Arnoldi Senior, from Browns Valley, constructed an illegal dirt road along Keystone Creek, near Loganville. One of the two men was reportedly driving a digger that was used to make alterations to a historic carriage route, in order to allow passage for their truck and mining equipment. That resulted in rock and soil entering the creek, which flows into the Yuba River. District Attorney Sandra Groven declined comment. But in the release, she said the Arnoldi’s were each sentenced to 30 days in jail. They also have to pay a fine of 81-hundred-35 dollars and need to establish a restoration plan for the areas that were vandalized. And if they fail to carry out the plan by August of next year, they’ll be sentenced to an additional eight months and will need to pay another 30-thousand-dollars each in fines. They were also placed on three years of felony probation and are banned from mining during this time.
