NID Water Quality Praised Overall In Updated Report

NID’s water system earns high marks for quality in a new report, though officials continue to combat E. coli contamination from local geese populations.
The sanitation of the NID water system received overall good grades from the latest five-year update presented to the Board of Directors at their recent meeting. The Board received a presentation before it was to be forwarded to the State Water Resources Control Board about a month ahead of the December deadline. It covers the Yuba and Bear River watershed. And Bonny Starr, a one-woman consulting firm located in Colfax, described the turbidity reduction in treated water as excellent…
But Starr also noted that e-coli contamination is still an
ongoing concern. She said levels remain high at Lake Wildwood. She said a
growing geese population as the main source all over the watersheds…
But Starr said about half of the district’s water treatment plants saw decreases in e-coli, especially at Lake of the Pines. That’s because of the work done at the raw water reservoir with the geese. She also cited some canal encasements in Smartsville. But Starr said she’d also like the district to develop an analysis of microplastics in local waterways. Overall, however, she praised NID as having some of the most pristine drinking water in the state.
