A stand off with an armed Penn Valley Man in Truckee that led to schools in the area being locked down yesterday, ended peacefully.
At about 11:30 yesterday morning the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office advised Truckee Police they had taken information that Robert Maklia, from Penn Valley was possibly in the Truckee area and in possession of a firearm. Maklia was said to be distraught over unknown circumstances. Truckee Police Sgt. He refused to drop the handgun and sought refuge behind his vehicle. Maklia discharged a round from his gun in an unknown direction while hiding behind his vehicle. He later put down his handgun and approached police. Maklia was not compliant with police commands to surrender and was taken into custody without incident after being struck with a less lethal bean bag round.
Maklia was transported to Tahoe Forest hospital for medical clearance and will be charged with Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, and Brandishing a Weapon to Law Enforcement. Officers of the California Highway Patrol, Nevada County Sheriff, and California State Parks assisted Truckee Police. Local schools were released from lock down immediately after Maklia was taken into custody. Local students were not in any danger.
